I believe it to be terribly important to stress the need for hard data here. What is possible does not satisfy my curiosity on this subject.

I have not dug very deep for the data, yet.

Comments #1 and #3 explain part of it. Also, while gay and lesbian individuals make up a small portion of the population, it is quite possible that gay and lesbian couples make up a fairly substantial proportion of couples unable to concieve and this explains their apparently disproportionate presence among adopters.

I'm not aware of a wave of gay adoptions of troubled children. Is there one?

The article says:

"In Massachusetts, "Forty percent of the children adopted have gone to gay and lesbian families," according to Democratic state Sen. Therese Murphy. Sen. Murphy seems totally oblivious to the implications. "Will you deny them their rights?" she asks."

Massachusetts should release the data that it has, while respecting privacy, because while this is a very interesting issue, more data would be helpful.

I would hazard a guess that Gay couples looking to adopt are probably NOT going to be particularly picky about the sex, race, medical issues of, or age of the type of children they wish to adopt.

The reason being is that very few birth-mothers will pick a gay person or couple as a choice for a private adoption.

As such, black or hispanic babies, children with pre-birth or post-birth ailments, crack-babies or the plethora of non-infant kiddies are luckily getting adopted by people who want to raise them, love then and provide for them.

There are easily thousands of couples wanting to adopt in the United States. There are also thousands of children who want and need homes.

My guess is that gay couples realizing that they are not likely to get picked are applying to adopt any child that the state will let them. This would cause the disproportionate ratio that's got you concerned.
